My maternal grandparents lived in Barton on Humber and we spent many weeks in the summer holidays staying in the town where we could wander freely in complete safety, but it was the 1950s!!! A day trip to Cleethorpes by train was eagerly anticipated and until the late 50s was steam hauled from New Holland Pier, we having arrived from Barton on the shuttle! Hence on a trip down memory lane with my mother in 1988 New Holland was visited and this was all that was left! On the right were the lines to the pier where the paddle steamer to Hull was boarded but Barrow Road Crossing signal box survived. 51524 and 51454 arrive at New Holland Town with the 11.00 Barton on Humber to Cleethorpes on the 9th August 1988. Whilst DMUs could never replace steam, for us boy trainspotters they had one advantage in that you could sit behind the driver and see all trains on the route! Dave Gommersall.
A Sheffield-Leeds DMU approaches Barnsley station on 15th August 1988. The era of the DMUs was fast drawing to a close at this time, the Class 101 was formed of E51524 + E51454. Andrew Walker.
