A Class 101 DMU (SC51460 closest) in the yard at East Kilbride circa late 1982. Thanks to John McGrevey for this information: This wasn’t an uncommon sight. Prior to the Hairmyres loop opening in 1990, the morning peak service had five trains into Glasgow in roughly a 45 minute period, so Corkerhill would send several units up there in the morning, and any that couldn’t go in the platform were put into the Yard and brought out as needed. Similarly, as trains arrived in the evening, some would go into the yard to keep the platform clear until things died down and the extras could go back to Corkerhill. The West ground frame (not in picture) was believed to be the most intensively used ground frame on ScR, if not the whole of BR, and was on double maintenance as any failure would cause chaos. Quite why this one has so many doors open and a ladder in use is a mystery!
