At Sheffield Station 31441 had been allocated to drag the 16.55 Sheffield to Huddersfield on 2nd August 1989 due to the failure of the 2 car DMU (53641 + 53291). Most DMUs were 30 years old in 1989 so it was not surprising they failed at times.
