Together forever .... Rumoured to be withdrawn from traffic fairly soon, one of OC's allocation of two Class 128 DPUs (diesel parcels units) W55992 rumbles along the up relief line at Poplar Jn, Acton, heading for Paddington ...... Inseparable since being introduced in 1960 both W55991+W55992 have been allocated to the London Division of the Western Region for over 27 years. Firstly at Southall, then Reading and now, for the last month, Old Oak Common. Both were transferred away to Cambridge 18 months later, with 55991 being withdrawn from there on 5/11/90, whilst 55992 was transferred, on paper at least, to Chester on 30/11/90 and immediately withdrawn ..... Both were later scrapped at M.C. Metals Ltd, Springburn, Glasgow ...... 1st July 1987. Nigel Mack.

By the time this picture was taken on 29 May 1987 only 8 of the original 10 Class 121 Driving Trailers remained in service. Here W54280 (L280) leads Pressed Steel Class 117 unit L417, formed of 51354 + 59506 + 51396 away from Acton Main Line whilst in charge of the 0916 Slough - Paddington service. Acton Yard is located just the other side of the bridge and the tracks to the right of the train are the up and down Poplars which connect the WR with the LMR at Acton Wells Jn. Delivered new to Southall (81C) in September 1960, W56280 was to spend its entire, almost 31 year life allocated to the Western Region. With spells at Southall, Reading and latterly Old Oak Common it was officially withdrawn on 26th March 1991 and scrapped by Gwent Demolition, Margam. Nigel Mack.
