Unknown Date

Two Class 103 Park Royal DMUs at Chester, date unknown. Chester General in its heyday and looking like a proper station. With the goods shed and the footbridge in the background 2 class 103 units are stabled awaiting their next service to Birkenhead Woodside. These units spent a lot of their working life in the Chester area working to Birkenhead, Manchester and into north Wales. Edgehillsignallman@Flickr.

103 DMU

circa 1963

Calling at Adderley Park circa 1963 is a 7 car dmu set, leading is a Park Royal coupled to a Gloucester RCW twin and finally a Metro-Cammell triple. Adderley Park station was opened in 1860, it's layout is a booking office at street level on Bordesley Green Road and buildings at platform level. The platform on the Birmingham bound side is backed by the approach to Adderley Park goods yard, a once busy and thriving yard handling considerable freight from this area of heavy industry. Factories included Morris Commercial and Arthur Holdens Paint, the finely detailed frontage of which still survives. The goods yard was home to many coal merchants whose carts could be seen clattering up the granite sett paved road from the the yard to Bordesley Green Road. The tiled building in front of the camera is a simple waiting room and is still extant although the tall chimney has been removed, the lighting is now electric and much more comprehensive. 13th May 1963

Neatly posed under the bridge at Hednesford station are a matching pair of Park Royal twin car DMUs, later known as class 103s. The blind of the right hand one is for Brownhills and the (rear) blind of the other is Rugeley Trent Valley. The position of the guards compartment can be located by the mailbag which has been thrown out onto the platform. Hednesford station closed in 1965 but in 1989 it was re-opened. Once very much a freight and diversionary line it now sees a regular train service and is at present being electrified, this will fill the Walsall to Rugeley T.V. electrification gap. 13th May 1963

This is Aldridge Station on 13/05/1963, into which a Park Royal DMU is about to call. Aldridge was the first station east of Walsall on the Sutton Park line to Castle Bromwich, it closed to passengers in January 1965, the line is still open as a freight route and there are persistant rumours that a passenger service may one day return. It will be too late for Aldridge as no trace of it now remains. The rather dramatic shot was taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

13th May 1963

A pair of 2 car Park Royal units are arriving at Cannock Station on 13 May 1963. The station was on the Walsall to Rugeley line. Today the line is a useful diversionary route and has a regular passenger service to Rugeley again once again (it lost the previous services in 1965) sadly little freight now uses the line since the closure of Rugeley Power station. The scene here has been completely eradicated. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

13th May 1963

A Park Royal DMU is arriving at the charmingly named Wyrley & Cheslyn Hay station on 13/05/1963. The train is being met by the Station Mistress and sadly, apart from Peter, nobody else is waiting. The little station was situated between Cannock and Bloxwich on the Rugeley Trent Valley to Walsall line. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

2nd August 1963

Dudley Port low level looks in a parlous state as a gleaming green 2 car Park Royal diesel multiple unit draws in with a train to Walsall. On the skyline is the large LNWR signal box and the fence of Dudley Port High level station gaunt against the light grey sky. In the grassland to the right a few corrugated iron buildings lie rusting and the abutments of the closed railway only support weeds. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith, 2 August 1963. Peter took two views of this scene at Kings Norton circa 1964, this is the first, with the Park Royal DMU gliding into the platform, many doors already open. Stanier Black Five 44775 is standing tender first at the Birmingham platform, carrying the correct 'light engine' lamp code. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

103 DMU

circa 1964

Peter took two views of this scene at Kings Norton, this is the second. Looking at the beehive hair styles and clothing of the ladies I would think around 1964, it is certainly winter time. The Park Royal DMU seems to be causing some interest the two lads are pointing at it and the stationmaster is also interested, his regulation hat at a jaunty angle. Stanier Black Five 44775 is standing tender first in the Birmingham platform. On the building end to the right of the DMU cab is a poster with a Derby Lightweight at passing Bassenthwaite Lake.
