2nd August 1978
Nottingham station on a wet and windy 2nd August 1978. This 2-car Class 114 dmu has just arrived with service from Skegness. I had arrived in Nottingham about 40 minutes earlier on the 09.35 Carlisle-Nottingham, hauled by 45 037, and was awaiting the 15.10 Nottingham-St Pancras (45140) to take me to Leicester. The Class 114 was formed 50044/56030. 50044 was new in March 1957, when it was allocated to Lincoln (40A). It stayed at Lincoln until October 1987, when it was transferred to Tyseley (TS). It was withdrawn from service at TS in October 1991 (during the Sprinter Revolution) and was scrapped by Mayer Newman at Snailwell. 56030 was new, also to 40A, in January 1957, and stated at LN until withdrawal in January 1986. 56030 (by then renumbered to 54030) was scrapped at Berry's yard in Leicester. A refurbished Class 114 DMU in Sheffield station with a Lincoln service in December 1978. DTCL E56043 is closest, while on the opposite platform is Class 123 E52102. Stuart Mackay Collection.

All change at Shepley. A Derby Twin set pauses at Shepley on 13th September 1978. We had alighted there to change for the Clayton West branch. Murray Liston.

On 16/9/78 a class 114 dmu heads towards Huddersfield over Penistone viaduct with a train from Sheffield via Barnsley. Stephen Burdett.
16th September 1978
A Sheffield Midland to Huddersfield train passes through Wadsley Bridge station on 16 September 1978 formed of a Class 114 DMU. At this time this service was routed via the former GC line through Sheffield Victoria to Penistone. Wadsley Bridge station closed to regular traffic on 15 June 1959, however it remained in use for football specials for matches at Hillsborough with some service trains also calling on match days. A Class 114 at Lincoln Central. This fleet of 49 power + trailer 2-car units was for many years allocated to Lincoln (LN) depot for medium-distance services across a wide area of eastern England, extending deep into Yorkshire and down to destinations such as Peterborough. Along with the Derby (DY) based Class 120s - which worked many Cross-Country routes across central England - they were largely replaced from the mid-1980s by Class 150/1 Sprinters. This shot illustrates the white and blue DMU Refurbished livery which was applied between 1975 and 1979. This image will have been taken in the late 1970s (though early 1980s is possible).
