On 3 January 1987 I had a trip to London Marylebone with the intention of photographing SR 777 Sir Lamiel leaving the station with a special to High Wycombe. LNER 4472 Flying Scotsman (or Flying Moneypit as it often called today) was also involved and is seen here waiting for a path to the stabling point. It also features two dmus pictured in heavy backlighting as they form up and down Banbury services. on the left a class 115 and on the right is two class 108/115 hybrids. The parapet of this road bridge is particularly high and it was necessary to either have high steps, or as I did, stand on the roof of a Land Rover complete with a platform and access ladder owned by another of the photographers present! Peter Tandy.
I took this shot of another anonymous class 115 as it performed a shunt move, shown by both red and white lights being lit, at London Marylebone on 3 January 1987. This shuffling about is no longer necessary in 2021 as changed signalling arrangements mean that there are no longer dedicated arrival and departure platforms at the terminus. Peter Tandy.
An Allerton Depot three-car Class 115 Suburban DMU, with Driving Motor Brake Second M51854 leading, was passing Cemetery Road at Wigan whilst working a Wigan North Western to Liverpool Lime Street service on January 3rd 1987. There was a small batch of these units allocated to Allerton, they were primarily used on the Cheshire Lines route between Liverpool and Manchester. Martyn Hilbert.
The branch from Luton to Dunstable was included in the itinerary of Hertfordshire Railtour's 'Chiltern Chariot' railtour on 17 January 1987. The journey began and ended at Marylebone, taking in such delights as Wembley, Kensington, Bedford and Aylesbury. The two class 115 DMUs are seen by Dunstable Park, the far end presumably at Dog Kennel Walk bridge as the train was prevented from getting to the very end of the line. At this time, cement and oil traffic still ran, this being the first passenger working since 1965. This section now forms part of the busway route to Houghton Regis. Kevin Lane.
