6th August 1983

Class 120 NVR Orton Mere 6 August 1983. For a few Saturdays during the school holidays in summer 1983 BR ran a DMU shuttle three times a day to connect Peterborough station via Fletton Junction with the Nene Valley Railway at Orton Mere. I travelled all the way down from Scotland to "do" this link line. Here we see the DMU having set back to allow the NVR steam service from Wansford to arrive. Today the line continues beyond where the sugar factory used to be at Woodston to Peterborough Town station, a new build almost but not quite where the former Peterborough East station used to be so Orton Mere now sees little use. A pair of Swindon Cross Country DMUs approach Poulton Le Fylde with the 14:45 Blackpool North – Manchester Victoria service on Saturday 13th August 1983. Note that the train displays a “Man Piccadilly” destination! The rear vehicle was one of the ScR DMBF conversions. Brian McDevitt.

A Swindon built Class 120 DMU sweeps through Salwick Station whilst working a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North Service on August 15th 1983. Although the station buildings were demolished in the early 1970s, the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway platform canopy was retained, now sadly replaced by a small shelter. Martyn Hilbert.

31 407 rolls into the now closed Lincoln St.Marks station with the 15.18 Cleethorpes to Newark Northgate on August 20, 1983. The space between the platforms was occupied by carriage sidings where Derby Eteches Park allocated class 120 3-car DMU set EP521 with a Met-Camm centre car resides. Adrian Nicholls.

Rolleston Station on the 5th of September 1983 with a Class 120 Cross Country DMU working the 2M84 17.33 Lincoln to Crewe service. My memories of these are travelling from Crewe to Nottingham on them when heading from Chester to watch Forest. If it was a weekday the hope was always that the seats directly behind the driver were 2nd class and the blinds were open. You always passed a succession of freight trains between Kidsgrove and Uttoxeter and the number could be gold dust if it was a Class 44! The KDH Archive.

Class 120/101 hybrid set EP521 at the front of a seven-car formation arrives at Heckington working the 11.31 Skegness-Nottingham on 10 September 1983. On the left the 09.36 Kings Cross-Skegness disappearing into the distance - this was hauled on this day by 31296. Lewis Bevan.

A 3-car Class 120 DMU (set EP514, probably led by 53687) is seen near Beeston station, Nottinghamshire, 14/09/1983. To the right is the building of the Shipstone Maltings - it was built in 1880, operational until 2000, then demolished in 2013 to make way for a housing development. Graeme Phillips Collection.

29th October 1983

On an Autumn evening, one of the Newton Heath allocated well-appointed and stylish Swindon built Cross-Country Class 120 DMU's, with Driving Motor Second Lavatory M51588 leading, coupled to a class 104 set, passes Salwick with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on October 29th 1983. Just visible through the bridge is Salwick station then complete with its Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway island platform canopy. On the extreme left is the cobbled access road to the former goods yard. This stretch of railway once had four running lines in the days when the three Blackpool stations were busy with express, residential and a prodigious amount of excursion traffic. Martyn Hilbert.
