30th August 1976
A blue 2-car Class 114 diesel multiple unit is passing the platforms of Doncaster St James' station with a train from Sheffield on the ex-MS&LR/Great Central line on 30th August 1976. This photo was taken looking south from near St James' Road bridge. St James' station, which consisted of a single island platform, was built by the LNER in 1933 to serve excursion traffic. It never had a regular timetabled service and did not appear in timetables, only in "Special Traffic Notices" when it was to be used. The disused platforms survived until the late 1990s. Pete LG99.

Lots of Rail Blue at the east end of Sheffield Midland station on 28th May 1978 but not many passengers about. I suspect these two BR Derby Class 114 dmus are stabled between duties while the one on the far left (Metro-Cam Class 101) had just arrived from Doncaster. Pete LG99.

Seen from the old multi-story car park to the north of Doncaster station stabled in the foreground is a Class 114 working the Sheffield service. Behind, 254003 with E43061 leading departs with the 1800 Kings Cross to Edinburgh, in the background are a Class 110 with a Leeds train and two class 31s and a 08 in the sidings. Keith Long.

A three-car trailer-brake BRC&W Class 104 DMU departing from Sheffield station with the 10:21 to Doncaster on 6 July 1978. Closest is DMCL E50547, the TBSL is E59213, the rear DMCL is presumably E50567, the vehicles being allocated to Neville Hill. Michael Mensing.

28th January 1984
On a chilly winters afternoon a Lincoln allocated 2-car class 114 Derby Heavyweight unit lead by vehicle E53021 calls at Rotherham Masborough station with the 16.05 Doncaster to Sheffield on 28 January 1984. Rotherham Masborough was built as a substantial four platform station serving two routes although by this date only those platforms on the former Midland mainline had a service, the far two here were on the route from Chesterfield via Barrow Hill and obsolete being on a freight only line. The station was poorly sited in the town so South Yorkshire PTE paid British Rail for Rotherham Central on the former GCR line to be reopened along with a short connecting line called the Holmes Chord. This spur allowed trains from the Sheffield line to reach the new station which opened on 11/5/87 and brought about the closure of Rotherham Masborough. Adrian Nicholls.

Two types of first generation DMUs in the East facing bays at Sheffield on the 30th April 1988, a Metro-Cammell built Class 111 with "Metro Train" branding which is off to Doncaster on the right, on the left is N678 (M53536 + out of view M53520), a Newton Heath allocated BRC&W built Class 104.
