25th June 1996
Class 117 Pressed Steel DMU set L707, with DMS 51377 nearest the camera and DMBS 51335 at the rear, are pictured at Gospel Oak with the 1003 to Barking on 25 June 1996. Plenty of period Network South East detail can be seen, from the branding on the DMU, to the station furniture and signage on the left.
The 13-mile route from North to East London was a Cinderella route for many years, using aged rolling stock. The Class 117s units were replaced by Class 150s under Silverllink, and then new Class 172 Turbostars appeared in 2010, but still only offering two coaches despite increased demand under the London Overground brand. The route was finally electrified in 2018, with four-car Class 710 Aventra units being used. The line was extended to Barking Riverside in 2022. Chris Boon.
